Assessment Process

Here you can read more about how a course of treatment for ADHD/ADD and autism, respectively, is typically structured. As we tailor each course to your specific needs, variations may occur.

If you are unsure whether a diagnostic assessment package is the right choice for you, we also offer an initial assessment consultation. The purpose of this is to help determine whether a full assessment is appropriate for you.

We also assess and plan courses for other possible diagnoses. You are very welcome to contact us for more information about these.

ADHD/ADD

The purpose of the assessment is to determine whether a diagnosis is present and, if so, which one. The assessment process typically consists of two sessions of two hours each but may be extended with additional sessions and cognitive testing if needed.

Assessment

  • This is a session that typically lasts two hours. The focus is on your general background, including your life history, symptoms, and any previous treatment. The session is conducted by one of our nurses, psychiatrists, or specialist psychologists. It is a good idea to bring a relative or a significant person in your life, but it is not required.

  • In some cases, it may be relevant to carry out a cognitive test. This takes two hours. The purpose is to provide further insight into cognitive functions such as problem-solving and memory. Cognitive tests are conducted by our specialist psychologists. Relatives or other accompanying persons may not participate in this part.

  • The diagnostic consultation focuses on the final assessment with the aim of establishing a diagnosis. This session is conducted by one of our specialist psychologists or medical specialists and typically lasts two hours. It is a good idea to bring a relative or a significant person in your life, but it is not required.

If the assessment process results in a psychiatric diagnosis where medical treatment may be relevant, a course of medication is initiated. This typically consists of three steps.

Medical Treatment Course

  • During the initiation step, you will meet with one of our specialist doctors. The session typically lasts 45 minutes. During this session, the doctor will, among other things, assess your heart and lungs to ensure that it is physically safe to prescribe medication. Based on the diagnosis, the specialist will also create a treatment plan and prescribe the appropriate medication. Relatives or other significant persons may attend by agreement and as needed.

  • To ensure that the medication is working as intended, you will be invited to attend regular follow-up appointments. These are conducted by our specialist doctors and nurses and may include psychoeducation as needed. The purpose of psychoeducation is to provide a better understanding of your diagnosis and the medical treatment. The sessions last between 30 and 45 minutes. You should expect at least three follow-up appointments before your treatment course can be completed with us and transferred to your general practitioner. Relatives or other significant persons may attend by agreement and as needed.

  • Once the medication is working stably, your care is transferred to your general practitioner. This means that the ongoing management of your medication, including prescription renewals, will be handled by your GP. Your discharge from our care takes place with one of our psychiatrists, who ensures that you are doing well and that relevant information is passed on to your GP. Relatives or other significant persons may attend by agreement and as needed.

In addition to a medication course, therapy may be relevant in some cases. Therapy can take place in parallel with the medication course, and in many cases it may be relevant to continue therapy after the management of the medication has been transferred to your general practitioner.

Therapy Course

  • A therapy session lasts 50 minutes and is conducted by our psychologists. The focus and topics included in the therapy are identified and planned based on your individual needs. Relatives may attend by agreement and as needed.

Autism

The purpose of the assessment is to determine whether a diagnosis is present and, if so, which one. The assessment process typically consists of three sessions of two hours each, but may be extended with additional sessions and cognitive testing if needed.

  • In the subsequent diagnostic interviews, the focus is on final diagnostic clarification with the aim of establishing one or more diagnoses. These sessions are conducted by one of our specialist psychologists or medical specialists and typically require two sessions of two hours each. It is a good idea to bring a relative or a significant person in your life, but it is not required.
